Muslim Media on cleric

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG), comprising Muslim professionals from various fields, has vehemently condemned religious extremism, demanding the swift arrest and prosecution of an Islamic cleric who placed a fatwa on First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu.

This cleric’s incendiary call for the assassination of the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, solely based on her Christian faith, has sparked widespread controversy and outrage.

MMWG’s call to action represents a critical juncture in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for religious tolerance and the protection of fundamental human rights.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, MMWG highlighted the urgency of the situation, referencing a viral video circulating on social media featuring the cleric’s dangerous rhetoric.

Labeling the cleric as “one of the bad elements in Nigerian society and not a true scholar of Islam,” MMWG’s stance reflects a broader condemnation within the Muslim community against the exploitation of religion for violent purposes.

Drawing from Islamic teachings, MMWG emphasized the religion’s core principles of peace and coexistence with “The People of the Book,” referring to Jews and Christians.

The group invoked the historical precedent set by Prophet Muhammad in Medina, where he established a community that respected the freedom of Christians to practice their faith, even within his mosque.

Additionally, MMWG called upon the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to take decisive action against Islamic preachers who distort religious teachings to incite violence or further personal agendas.

The group’s appeal underscores the importance of internal oversight within Muslim leadership to uphold authentic Islamic values and combat extremist ideologies.

Directing a message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady, MMWG urged them not to be swayed by the cleric’s inflammatory rhetoric, emphasizing that such extremist views do not represent the majority and should be addressed through legal channels to maintain national peace and security.
