Mazzarri sack by Napoli

Former Napoli head coach Walter Mazzarri has blamed Victor Osimhen’s absence while on duty for Nigeria at AFCON as the reason for his sack by the club.

The Italian insinuated that the time Osimhen was away from the club, was the determining factor in the decision by Napoli to sack him.

GWG.ng reports that Osimhen missed nine games for Napoli as he was representing Nigeria at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he led his country to the final, unfortunately losing 2-1 to the hosts.

Out of those 9 games, Napoli managed to win just three and currently sit a lowly 9th position in Serie A. Barely a year after they conquered Italy, winning the Scudetto in style whilst also breaking their 33-year wait without a league title.

Osimhen was pivotal to that success story as the won the Golden Boot after scoring 25 goals for the Partenopei. However, Mazzarri’s dismissal marks Napoli’s second managerial casualty of the season after Rudi Garcia was also relieved of his duties just three months ago.

The 24-year-old striker marked his return to the club with an equalising goal in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash against Spanish champions Barcelona. He still remains the club’s highest goalscorer across all competitions, despite missing almost three months due to injury and international duty and the sack of Mazzarri by Napoli is believed to have been triggered by the absence of Osimhen.

In other news, Osimhen is also a target for French giants Paris Saint-Germain, as they look to sign him for a world record fee as a replacement for Kylian Mbappe who is set to join Real Madrid next summer. The Nigerian is their primary target and they will likely offer a whooping £150 million for his services.
