TUC Explains Why It Pulled Out Of NLC Hardship Protest
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate the importation of food items from around the globe within two weeks as it Monday explained its decision to pull out of the protest against hardship initiated by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC.
In a bold stance, the TUC squarely blamed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank for exacerbating the soaring cost of living in Nigeria. The TUC further accused these global entities of advocating for the removal of subsidies on petroleum products and electricity tariffs, urging the government to resist yielding to their influence.
Amidst the brewing unrest, the TUC has staunchly declared its non-involvement in the proposed nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asserting that it will not partake in any activity to which it was not initially party to. These assertions formed the core of the address delivered by TUC President, Comrade Festus Osofo, during a press briefing held in Abuja.
Although the TUC did not explicitly address the planned protest by its sister union, the NLC, in its recommendations to the federal government, Comrade Osofo emphasized their detachment from such endeavors. He emphasized the importance of joint agreement in undertaking collective actions, highlighting the absence of any formal collaboration between the TUC and the NLC in this instance.
Addressing journalists, Comrade Osofo questioned the legitimacy of the purported alliance, underscoring the lack of a formal agreement or joint decision-making process. He challenged reporters to produce evidence of any prior agreement or joint undertaking between the TUC and the NLC, reaffirming the TUC’s commitment to principled collaboration and unified action.
In essence, the TUC’s stance reflects a commitment to principled engagement and a refusal to be drawn into activities without clear consensus and agreement among stakeholders. As tensions mount and economic pressures persist, the TUC remains steadfast in advocating for policies that prioritize the welfare and interests of Nigerian workers and citizens.
