FG Prepares To Announce New Minimum Wage For Workers

The Federal Government of Nigeria is on the brink of finalizing and announcing a new minimum wage for civil servants. This significant development was disclosed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during a presidential initiative for women’s empowerment held in Abuja on March 8th, 2024.

The impending announcement of the new minimum wage is a pivotal component of the government’s overarching strategy to enhance the welfare of workers while also embracing sustainable environmental practices. Central to this strategy is the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, which align with efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly transportation alternatives.

This initiative comes on the heels of a series of agreements forged between the Tinubu administration and organized labor in 2023, aimed at forestalling a nationwide strike and addressing the pressing concerns of workers. Among these agreements were provisions for the introduction of CNG vehicles as substitutes for petrol-powered vehicles, the implementation of a cash transfer program, and an increment in the minimum wage.

To support these initiatives, the government has committed substantial financial resources, earmarking N100 billion for the acquisition of 3,000 CNG-powered 20-seater buses between August 2023 and March 2024. Additionally, an extra N130 billion has been allocated for CNG conversion and the procurement of electric vehicles, underscoring the administration’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Amidst these deliberations, the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) has been actively engaged in advocating for the interests of workers and proposing revised minimum wage figures. Notably, the NLC has recommended a minimum wage of N794,000 for workers in the South-West zone and N540,000 for their counterparts in the South East, reflecting regional variations in living costs and economic dynamics.

As the government prepares to unveil the new minimum wage, anticipation is high among civil servants and labor unions, who await eagerly for the outcome of these deliberations, which hold significant implications for the livelihoods and well-being of millions of workers across Nigeria.
