Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, made a significant announcement on Tuesday, formally declaring his candidacy for the upcoming 2024 governorship election in the state. This announcement carries profound significance as it marks Aiyedatiwa’s intention to continue the developmental trajectory initiated by his predecessor, the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Following the passing of Governor Akeredolu in 2023 after a prolonged illness, Aiyedatiwa assumed the role of governor, stepping into the shoes of his former boss. At the official declaration ceremony held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, the state capital, Aiyedatiwa expressed his belief that Governor Akeredolu would be proud to see him as a worthy successor.

Addressing a crowd of enthusiastic All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and leaders from across the state, Aiyedatiwa reiterated Governor Akeredolu’s desire for him to continue the administration’s work beyond his tenure. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the legacy of development and progress set by his late predecessor.

During his speech, Aiyedatiwa highlighted the achievements of his administration since assuming office, underscoring his focus on the welfare of the people. He mentioned initiatives to revive stalled projects, settle outstanding salary arrears, and ensure prompt payment to workers. Additionally, he outlined ongoing efforts to create employment opportunities, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare.

Drawing on his extensive political experience, Aiyedatiwa emphasized his qualifications for the governorship role. He cited his previous roles as a Representative of Ondo State on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as well as his tenure as Deputy Governor and Acting Governor under Governor Akeredolu. These experiences, he asserted, have equipped him with the necessary skills and insights to lead the state effectively.

He urged for the continuity of the administration’s progress beyond 2025, warning against any regression that could jeopardize the state’s development. Aiyedatiwa’s declaration signals a pivotal moment in Ondo State politics, setting the stage for a closely watched gubernatorial election in 2024.
