FCCPC To Curtail Rise In Price Of Pure Water

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has criticized the steep rise in sachet water prices, commonly known as pure water, calling it unacceptable.

Speaking at an event marking the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day in Abuja, FCCPC’s acting executive vice-chairman, Adamu Abdullahi, voiced concerns over the unfair hike in sachet water prices by various groups, stating it unfairly burdens consumers.

Abdullahi emphasized that while costs like electricity, fuel, and packaging materials have gone up, the significant jump in sachet water prices cannot be justified, especially since many producers already own their machinery.

He highlighted the presence of associations among product producers, citing examples like egg sellers demanding lower prices from farmers and reselling at higher rates, leading to the formation of undesirable cartels.

Vowing to tackle price fixing, Abdullahi stressed FCCPC’s commitment to dismantling such cartels to ensure fair pricing for consumers, with a call for consumers to report grievances.

While clarifying that FCCPC isn’t a price control body, Abdullahi reaffirmed its dedication to addressing soaring food prices, citing factors like market cartels, price fixing, and lack of transparency in pricing as contributors.

He mentioned recent actions against deceptive pricing practices, such as the closure of a major supermarket in Abuja, which, after compliance with FCCPC guidelines, resumed operations.

Assuring ongoing vigilance, Abdullahi pledged continued monitoring of supermarkets to safeguard consumer interests effectively..
