During a LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand, a harrowing incident unfolded, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic outcome. As a flight attendant made her way through the confined space of the cockpit to serve lunch to the pilots, an accidental press of the seat position switch occurred.

This unintended action caused an abrupt and forceful shift in the cockpit seats, startling the pilot, who instinctively reacted by forcefully pressing the control stick, resulting in a sharp dive of the Boeing 787 aircraft.

The sudden descent induced fear among the 263 passengers and nine cabin crew members, leading to approximately 50 individuals sustaining injuries from the unexpected maneuver.

Within the cabin, pandemonium ensued, with one passenger thrown against the ceiling before crashing onto an armrest, and another enduring a distressing experience in the toilet.

The gravity of the situation became apparent as, following the aircraft’s safe landing in New Zealand, four of the injured individuals required overnight hospitalization for treatment.

In response to this near-tragic event, Boeing issued an urgent advisory to all operators of its aircraft, emphasizing the critical need to secure cockpit seat switch covers and recommending the disconnection of power to pilots’ electric seats as precautionary measures to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.
