The Ondo State Police Command has provided insights into the heartbreaking death of a woman allegedly stabbed to death by her 17-year-old niece in Akure, shedding light on the incident’s underlying psychiatric issues.

According to SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, authorities were notified of the aunt’s demise on March 17, after her body was discovered in a state of decomposition.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the victim had suffered stab wounds, with a knife recovered from the crime scene.

Reports indicate that the teenager, who had been residing with her deceased aunt since the age of six, went missing from home. Concerns were raised by residents upon detecting a foul odor emanating from the house, prompting the deceased’s sister to contact the police upon the grim discovery.

During interrogation, the teenage girl admitted to stabbing her aunt and confining her in the house, citing ongoing pressure to adhere to medication as the motive behind her actions.

Family members disclosed that the teenager had been under her aunt’s care since childhood but began displaying symptoms of mental illness in 2023. She had previously undergone treatment at a psychiatric hospital in the state and was discharged under her aunt’s supervision.

The psychiatric hospital corroborated these details by providing the police with the girl’s medical history.

Following these revelations, the teenager has been placed in protective custody at a police medical facility while investigations into the incident continue
