Rage Over Child Marriage As 63-Year-Old Man Weds Girl, 12

Controversy has erupted in the Nungua indigenous community in Accra, Ghana, following the marriage of a 12-year-old girl-child to a 63-year-old influential traditional priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII.

The customary ceremony, held amidst elaborate festivities on Saturday, has drawn widespread condemnation from both local and international observers. Images and videos circulating on social media have fueled outrage over the apparent endorsement of child marriage within the community.

During the event, attendees reportedly encouraged the young bride to prepare for marital duties, raising concerns about the nature of the union and the exploitation of a minor.

Critics have called for urgent intervention from authorities to annul the marriage and investigate Tsuru’s conduct. While Ghanaian law mandates a minimum marriage age of 18, child marriage remains prevalent in the country, with many girls wedded before reaching adulthood.

In response to mounting criticism, community leaders have defended the marriage as a matter of tradition and custom, dismissing opposition as misguided. Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, a prominent local leader, emphasized the cultural significance of the union and asserted that the girl’s education had not been compromised.

As the controversy unfolds, the fate of the young bride hangs in the balance, awaiting an official response from the authorities in Ghana to address the hanging culture of child marriage.
