Why Rivers Lawmakers Cannot Threaten Fubara With Impeachment – PDP

The Rivers chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern challenge to the 27 lawmakers of the state Assembly who are threatening to impeach Governor Siminilayi Fubara, asserting that they lack the authority and legitimacy to carry out such actions.

The PDP rather asserted that the lawmakers who recently defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC should first determine their legal status as lawmakers.

GWG.ng reports that over the weekend, the lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, declared their readiness to impeach Governor Fubara should he continue to violate the Constitution of Nigeria and the laws of the state, an assertion that has now drawn the response of the PDP.

In response, the PDP has criticized the lawmakers’ stance and their threat to impeach Fubara, questioning their legitimacy and urging them to respect the rule of law by allowing the courts to determine their status.

Sydney Tambari Gbara, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary, emphasized the importance of upholding the Nigerian Constitution, particularly Section 109, which pertains to defections from the PDP to the APC.

Gbara admonished the lawmakers to refrain from disturbing the peace of the state and accused them of engaging in illegal activities, including unauthorized assembly and decision-making.

He urged them to confront the legal challenges questioning their legitimacy instead of resorting to unconstitutional measures to undermine the state government.

Furthermore, Gbara, the PDP spokesman warned the lawmakers of the repercussions of their threat to impeach Fubara, cautioning that history would judge them harshly for choosing disruption over peace and reconciliation.
