Kano Censors Board Bans Crossdressing, Thuggery In Movies

The Kano State Film Censorship Board has issued a directive banning movies that portray or endorse crossdressing and thuggery within the state.

According to Abba El-Mustapha, the executive secretary of the board, this decision was communicated during a recent meeting with Kannywood management and stakeholders.

Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s spokesperson, stated that the move was prompted by public concerns regarding the potential glorification of criminal activities and inappropriate behaviors, particularly among young people.

El-Mustapha emphasized, “it is high time to fish out any film that may demoralize our customs, norms and values in the name of reaching popularity, viewers or business making.”

Interestingly, this development coincides with statements from the Nigeria Police Force indicating that cross-dressing is not considered a criminal offense under Nigerian law. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer, clarified that individuals like Bobrisky cannot be arrested solely for cross-dressing. However, he acknowledged that the crossdressing lifestyle may not conform to societal norms, stressing that law enforcement agencies are obligated to uphold the law and cannot arrest individuals based solely on their choice of clothing or lifestyle.
