Impeachment: Shaibu Hangs For Life As Abuja Court Sits On Monday

The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to resume hearing on the lawsuit filed by Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, challenging the state House of Assembly’s move to impeach him.

Justice I. E. Ekwo had previously adjourned the lawsuit till April 8 for the defendants to appear and show cause why the plea to the court by Shaibu to halt the impeachment proceedings should not be granted.

Last week, the seven-man impeachment panel, chaired by Justice Omonuwa (retd.), concluded its proceedings after Shaibu failed to appear before the panel to defend allegations of perjury and leaking government secrets against him.

Shaibu and his counsel opted not to attend the panel’s sessions on the premise that the lawsuit in the Abuja court was yet to be determined.

The Edo State House of Assembly, the petitioner in the case, had previously presented its case against Shaibu, accusing him of violating the Oath of Secrecy and acting contrary to constitutional provisions by allegedly leaking government secrets.

While the counsel to Shaibu, Prof Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), attended the initial session, he later withdrew after the panel refused his request to suspend proceedings pending the lawsuit in the Abuja court.

Following the conclusion of the panel’s proceedings, the Chairman announced that the panel would forward its report to the Edo State Chief Justice, who established the investigative panel.

Meanwhile, sources close to the House of Assembly indicate that lawmakers are eagerly awaiting the report’s delivery, emphasizing that the timing is ultimately determined by the Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
