Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of United Bank of Africa (UBA) and Heirs Holdings has expressed interest in potentially acquiring a club in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The announcement came after a suggestion on the X platform (formerly Twitter) urged more big businesses to support Nigerian football.

Adebayo Mustapha, a user on the platform, proposed that the Nigerian government should encourage large companies to invest in football clubs as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Mustapha argued that linking teams with companies would enhance the competitiveness of the league.

In response to Mustapha’s suggestion, Tony Elumelu revealed that the Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh, had already discussed the idea with him of becoming engaged in the NPFL. He stated that the proposal is currently undergoing a feasibility evaluation to determine its viability.

“This is a great idea,” Elumelu tweeted. “The Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh, has already engaged me on this matter, and we are currently assessing its feasibility.”

GWG.ng reports that the prospects of Tony Elumelu entering the NPFL is one that is bound to extend his reaches in the Nigerian economy with his reaches extending from banking, power, philanthropy, hospitality among others.
