The Nigerian government will penalize electricity distribution companies (DisCos) that do not provide 20 hours of electricity to Band A category customers, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has said.

Adelabu disclosed this on Tuesday via X.

He clarified that the recent tariff increase specifically applies to electricity consumers falling within the Band A category, ensuring they receive a minimum of 20 hours of power supply.

Recall that last Tuesday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised the electricity tariffs for customers in the Band A category from N66/kWh to N225 per kilowatt-hour.

The announcement of the hike has sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians.

Highlighting certain aspects of the tariff adjustment reform, Adelabu stated:

“Federal Government to save N1.5 trillion with tariff adjustment.

“Federal Government still subsidizing Bands below A.

“Pricing changes will help increase liquidity to the NESI.

“DisCos will be sanctioned for supplying less than 20 hours of electricity to Band A customers”.

However, he did not specify the nature of the sanction.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Society of Engineers urged NERC to enforce stringent sanctions against Discos that do not provide Band A customers with 20 hours of power.
