Former President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the death of Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, a former minister of science and technology and also the first civilian governor of the old Abia State, describing him as an intellectual giant.

In a statement condoling the family and the nation on the death of Dr Onu issued on his behalf by his spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari described the deceased as a notable politician who besides serving as the first civilian governor of Abia State also served in his administration as minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

In his reaction to the news of the death of the former chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, a party that once fielded him as a presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari said the nation had lost “one of its most outstanding scientific minds and intellectuals. He was an intellectual giant. My heart goes out to his family, the government and people of Abia State and the country at large. May his soul rest in peace.”

GWG.ng reports that Dr Onu was also a presidential candidate of the old All Peoples Party, APP who, however, submerged his aspiration to the alliance between the party and the Alliance for Democracy, AD.
