The All Progressives Congress, APC has subtly disowned the penultimate governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as a member of the party.

GWG.ng reports that the National Secretary of the APC, Ajibola Basiru disowned Aregbesola as a member of the party while listing only Chief Bisi Akande and Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola as the former governors of the state in the party.

Aregbesola governed Osun State between 2010 and 2018 having won election on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN which subsequently merged into the APC on whose platform he won re-election in 2014.

Aregbesola once reckoned as one of the main political enforcers in the camp of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, served as commissioner for works in Lagos State between 1999 and 2003.

However, multiple reports have alleged a falling out between Aregbesola and Tinubu leading to what some claim as his lukewarm activities in the affairs of the APC in years. He was accused of working against the re-election of Oyetola in 2022 and was largely invisible in the Tinubu for President project.

However, speaking at a press conference in Osogbo at the weekend, the APC national secretary, Basiru while hailing former APC governors of the state mentioned Oyetola and Akande with a conspicuous silence on Aregbesola, ironically the only former APC governor to have served two terms in office.

“Our party is a party of leadership. As of today, there are two former governors in our party, Baba Bisi Akande and Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.

“The two of them will always remain my leaders. So, you cannot say that I am fighting with my leaders.”

On Aregbesola, he said:

“Go and ask Aregbesola which party he belongs to.

“I am the National Secretary of APC and I know that we have done a series of elections and he has never participated in any since 2022 in the state. I don’t know which party he belongs to.

“Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola sent Salah greetings to me after which I called him and we spoke for about ten minutes, we also cracked banters.

“He also promised me that my Salah gift is already reserved, so somebody who has that for me, I don’t know the problem people say is between us.”
