A 25-year-old Indian man, Sriram Ambarla, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after he proposed to his ex-girlfriend, Sona Biju, in a London restaurant in 2022 with a knife. The brutal attack, which was caught on camera, left the 23-year-old victim with life-threatening injuries.

Ambarla, from Hyderabad, had a history of manipulating and abusing Ms. Biju, both physically and mentally, during their relationship, which began in 2017. Despite their split in 2019, Ambarla continued to harass and threaten Ms. Biju, including showing up at her workplace and demanding she marry him.

On the day of the attack, Ambarla searched online for “How to kill a human instantly with a knife” and “What happens if a foreigner murders someone in the UK” before arriving at the restaurant where Ms. Biju worked. He approached her, threatened to kill her if she didn’t agree to marry him, and then slashed her throat and stabbed her nine times.

Ms. Biju survived the attack but spent a month in critical condition. Ambarla was sentenced at the Old Bailey on April 25, 2024, after pleading guilty to attempted murder and possessing a knife in a public place. He was also given a lifetime restraining order to never contact the victim again.
