CSOs electricity tariff hike minister's resignation

Civil Society Organisations, CSOs under the Forum for Good Governance in Nigeria (FGGN) have expressed concern over the recent increase in electricity tariffs and are mobilising to demand for the resignation of the power minister, Adebayo Adelabu.

In response, the CSOs have announced plans to stage a protest against the Minister of Power, Adelabu, for his insistence on implementing the tariff hike despite the economic challenges facing Nigerians.

A statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Abraham Douglas, and Secretary of the group, Bala Galadima Ikara, described the Minister’s position as “insensitive.”

The group emphasized the need for the Minister to prioritize initiatives aimed at restoring constant power supply. They argue that a reliable electricity supply is crucial for attracting investors and fostering sustainable economic growth, rather than proposing tariff hikes during a period marked by developmental setbacks in the country.

The statement said, “the ministers claims that if the federal government continues to pay electricity subsidy for Nigerians, investors will not come is illusionary and unacceptable.

“Adelabu has no business remaining in the critical offices he occupies for failing Nigerians he should just take the honourable path and resign, or be faced with frequent civil society mass actions because Nigerians are sick and tired of his weakness and lack of capacity to deliver on Tinubu’s campaign promise,” the CSOs said in the joint statement.
