A heartbreaking story has emerged from South Africa, where a 16-year-old girl, Musa Tshabalala, took her own life after learning she was conceived through rape. Musa, a grade 10 learner at East Bank High School in Alexandra, Johannesburg, died, leaving her family and community devastated.

According to her cousin, Buyisiwe Tshabalala, Musa’s life was marked by sadness and struggles. She was raised by her 78-year-old grandmother, who had been supporting her with a grant.

Musa’s mother, who was only 12 years old when she gave birth to Musa, had abandoned her and never returned.

Musa’s journey to self-discovery took a tragic turn when she learned about her conception. She began asking questions, but her grandmother, who was not free to share the truth, couldn’t provide the answers she sought. The revelation that her alleged father was a family member was too much for Musa to bear.

In the weeks leading up to her suicide, Musa sought more information about her parents, but the silence and poverty at home exacerbated her emotional pain. Her grandmother, who is now struggling to raise funds for Musa’s burial, recalled how Musa felt responsible for her mother’s absence and the family’s dire circumstances.

Buyisiwe Tshabalala told ZiMoja, a local publication, “Musa’s upbringing was very sad. She was conceived through rape, and when she found out, she began asking a lot of questions. It broke her even more when she was told that the alleged rapist is a family member.”

As the family grapples with the loss of their beloved Musa, they are appealing for help to cover the costs of her burial.
