A disturbing incident occurred at Silver Bird International School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when a family attacked and flogged a female teacher, Sonia Amadi, and an admin officer, Joy Ajayi, over alleged corporal punishment of their child, Favour, a J.S.S.1 student.

GWG.ng reports that the incident occurred on Monday when the family accosted Sonia Amadi, an English teacher, on her way to work and flogged her, claiming she had whipped their child in the Port Harcourt school.

They then entered the school compound, locked up Joy Ajayi in her office, and threatened to harm her as well. The situation was dire until other parents intervened, preventing further violence.

According to Joy Ajayi, three boys entered her office, locked the door, and threatened her with scissors, demanding to know why their brother was flogged. Despite pleas from other teachers and parents, they refused to open the door for over 15 minutes.

Sonia Amadi, the English teacher, was already severely flogged by the family when they encountered her at the school gate. The mother of the boy also slapped her. The family’s actions have been widely condemned, with many calling for peaceful resolution of conflicts.

The school management has filed a complaint over the teacher that was flogged at the Ada George Police Division, and Sonia Amadi has been issued a medical form for treatment. The Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, a rights group, has also denounced the assault and invasion, urging parents to seek redress through appropriate channels.

National Coordinator Price Wiro emphasized, “Resort to self-help by taking the laws into your hands is not the way to go. I therefore call on the Police to thoroughly investigate this matter; anybody found culpable should face the law.”
