Chairman NIJOCAN Warns Of Worsening Climate Crisis In Nigeria

The Chairman of Nigerian Journalists for Climate Action Network (NIJOCAN), Amechi Chuks Onyema, has said that human activities are climate change threatening to life in Nigeria.

Onyema who revealed this in an interview with GWG.ng said, “deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors are contributing to climate change.

He added, cutting down trees, use of carbon dioxide, emissions from oil and gas industry have led to the detereoration of climate in Nigeria.

Commending the effort of the Federal government in combating climate issues, he noted that more needs to be done “especially in the area of awareness.”

Onyema highlighted key roles individuals can play in combating claimate issues in Nigeria.

He said, “Save energy at home. Much of our electricity and heat are powered by coal, oil and gas.

“Change your home’s source of energy. …

Walk, bike or take public transport. Switch to an electric vehicle. Consider your travel.”

“Reduce, reuse, repair and recycle. …

Eat more vegetables. Throw away less food,” he added.

He also highlighted that Government should, “Create enabling environment for the various actions against climate change to thrive.” 

Onyema tasked Non Governmental Organizations to “Create more awareness and take the message to the grassroots.”

He also called on International organization/bodies to keep supporting local climate actions in Nigeria.
