An enraged mob allegedly aligned with Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure, on Monday beat up protesters allegedly from the Edo State chapter of the party who came demanding for the resignation of the embattled national chairman.

The turmoil erupted as the anti-Abure protesters arrived in multiple vehicles, brandishing placards and vocalizing solidarity chants.

However, as some of the protesters disembarked from one of the vehicles, suspected thugs waiting in ambush assailed them with sticks and other makeshift weapons, compelling the drivers to hastily depart.

However, intervention by armed police officers and Department of State Security (DSS) operatives ensued as the thugs escalated the violence by hurling stones towards the nearby Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, dispersing reporters covering the confrontation.

The swift response of security personnel helped prevent further deterioration of the situation.
