Customs Service Condemns Viral Video of Officers Fighting with VIO
A viral video showing Nigeria Customs Service officers engaging in a physical altercation with Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) at the AYA Roundabout, Abuja VIO Office on Friday, May 24, has sparked widespread condemnation. The video, which surfaced on Tuesday, May 28, showed Customs officers exchanging blows and gunshots ringing out intermittently, prompting police intervention to calm the situation.
In a swift response, the Nigeria Customs Service has denounced the incident, labeling it “regrettable” and “self-motivated.” According to a statement released by Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer, the Service is deeply concerned and empathetic towards those affected.
The statement emphasized that the officers involved are from the Customs Mechanical Unit in Karu Barracks, Abuja, and their actions contradict the values and operational standards of the NCS. The statement said that the Comptroller-General of Customs prioritizes collaboration with sister security agencies and stakeholders to ensure national safety and security, and this incident undermines that goal.
“An investigation is currently underway, and disciplinary measures will be taken to prevent future occurrences. The Customs Service reassures the public of its commitment to upholding professionalism and maintaining harmonious relationships with other security agencies,” the Customs Service said.
