Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has come under fire for his recent comments on the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

In a post on his official social media handle, Onanuga blamed the Labour Party for the strike, accusing them of playing politics and harming the Nigerian people.

According to Onanuga, the strike has prevented many sick Nigerians from accessing medical care at government hospitals, including those with critical medical conditions.

He alleged that many affiliates of the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are members and supporters of the Labour Party, and therefore bear grudges against the Tinubu administration.

However, Nigerians have taken to the comment section to criticize Onanuga’s statement, accusing him of politicizing the issue and failing to address the genuine concerns of the workers. Many have pointed out that the strike is a result of the government’s failure to meet the demands of the workers, including the payment of a living wage and improved working conditions.

n6oflife6: I’m sure when your children disagree with you at home you accuse them of being Obidients, Igbos, Peter Obi supporters & IPOb members.. 🤣🙄🤡

@seunalaran: 🤣 All of you are suddenly singing the hospital songHow many hospitals in Nigeria today rely on the power grid? 😂

@ayosky: Imagine this statement. Even Buhari’s government planned to increase the minimum wage before removing the subsidy. Your govt removed subsidy and a full year after hasn’t touched minimum wage and you are here saying it’s politics. How did we end up with people like this in govt???

@jakesolasupo: It’s extreme that Tinubu could buy a yacht, travel in an over bloated entourage, and award a multi-trillion naira coastal road project to his trusted friend and can’t pay the workers a ‘living’ wage. Stay in your house if you’re bereft of ideas on how to lead a nation.

@bruzeee: One year after the life truncating subsidy removal, wages remain the same and you’re typing this?

@alamstan: You are suddenly talking about the hospital just to seek the empathy of the masses. Hospital and the medical system which the government has refused to fund, hypocrites indeed!

The backlash against Onanuga’s comments has highlighted the growing frustration among Nigerians with the government’s handling of the strike. As the industrial action continues, it remains to be seen how the government will address the issues at hand and find a resolution to the crisis.
