The Super Eagles’ preparation for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic has hit a snag due to internal discontent within the technical crew.

Assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi, has refused to join the team, citing disrespect from head coach Finidi George. Amokachi, who was brought into the technical crew by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is protesting his designation as the second assistant coach.

Sources within the NFF have confirmed that Amokachi’s appointment was not Finidi’s choice, as he opted for Benjamin James as his immediate right-hand man and tension has been brewing as a result. “Amokachi may not be part of the technical crew after all because he feels Finidi was disrespecting him by saying he can only be the second assistant coach,” a source told New Telegraph.

“You remember that Amokachi applied for the position of Chief Coach before it was given to Finidi, and the NFF feels he could be of help to the system. “There was no clarity as to his designation when they were unveiled and the NFF has been unable to get Finidi to accept Amokachi as his immediate righthand man. “Amokachi has stayed away from the team but the Ministry of Sports has waded in asking the former assistant to the late Stephen Keshi to accept his new role.

It remains to be seen if Amokachi will change his mind.” Meanwhile, Finidi has now enjoyed the full complement of his squad with the arrival of the remaining players in Uyo yesterday. Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi joined the camp before lunch, while goalkeeper Maduka Okoye arrived later in the evening.
