A Delta State High Court in Asaba has sentenced Police Inspector Mr. Ubi Ebri to death for murder.

Ebri was accused of killing Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and seller, on April 5, 2023, during a stop-and-search operation along Ugbolu Asaba Road in the state capital.

The incident sparked chaos in the city, leading to widespread protests by outraged youths. The prosecution, led by E.H. Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, alleged that Ebri was part of the police patrol team conducting the stop-and-search exercise.

Onyeka and his wife were driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were stopped by the police team.

According to the prosecution, Ebri opened fire into the vehicle, fatally wounding Onyeka in the head. Onyeka’s wife, who was sitting in the front seat with him, was unharmed.

Justice C.D. Diai presided over the court and ultimately convicted Ebri, sentencing him to death.
