The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has confirmed that Nigerians will begin using a single multipurpose identity card combining identity, financial, and social services by August this year.

The card, announced in April, is a collaborative effort with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System to offer increased options for domestic consumers and foster innovative, cost-effective, and competitive service delivery.

A high-ranking implementation team member revealed that the commission is working tirelessly to meet its goals, despite minor delays, and is currently in the testing and deployment stage. The official stated, “We plan to launch between July and August. We’re working extra hard to achieve this target.”

The new identity card will include a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card. The NIMC is ensuring the card is scalable, and integrations with banks are ongoing to enable the card’s payment capabilities.

This development marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s identity management and financial inclusion efforts. The public can expect a more innovative, efficient, and competitive service delivery experience once the card is launched and with it a departure from the use of multiple cards.
