Storm As Bashir El-Rufai Says Nothing Will Happen When TInubu Is Voted Out
By Benjamin Abioye
The son of former Kaduna State governor and prominent APC member, Nasir El-Rufai, Bashir El-Rufai, has sparked heated debate with his prediction that incumbent President Bola Tinubu will lose his re-election bid in 2027.
His statement has caused a significant stir among commenters on social media.
Some advised Bashir to steer clear of such controversial remarks, with one user saying, “Bashir, don’t go this lane! At times keep mute! Silence is a virtue. Learn it!” Another user mentioned, “You’ve just earned a follower. ✌🏾”
Meanwhile, some questioned his timing, accusing him of hypocrisy for not making similar statements during former President Buhari’s term. “@bigmorsh: Interesting. I wonder why you didn’t move to vote out Buhari. But now that your father’s ambition is on the line, your voice is loudest. We know what we are doing. Carry on.”
In response to the criticism, Bashir stated, “I don’t care about me,” indicating his resolve despite the backlash.
Some users supported his stance, such as @BeamEng who said, “E don red, e don set, I am supporting you on this agenda,” while others criticized his motives, suggesting his views were influenced by personal interests rather than genuine concern for Nigerians.
Bashir’s comments come amidst tensions between his father, Nasir El-Rufai, and President Tinubu’s administration, following the Senate’s rejection of his ministerial nomination due to security reports from the State Security Service.
Bashir El-Rufai urged Nigerians to remain patient on his prediction about Tinubu until the next election, stating, “Nobody is too big to be elected out of office by the people. It will happen & wallahi nothing will happen. So forget all these intimidations flying up and down. Let us be patient.”
He also criticized the current regime’s reliance on policies supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the free-floating naira exchange rate. Bashir warned that these institutions would not save President Tinubu if he seeks re-election, saying, “Even IMF & World Bank no go save una that time. Political strategist una,” referencing Tinubu’s political influence in Lagos State, where he served as governor and has had significant sway in choosing his successors.
Following the Senate’s failure to confirm his ministerial nomination, Nasir El-Rufai withdrew his interest in the appointment. He commented that if President Tinubu had genuinely wanted him in his cabinet, he would have ensured Senate approval. Since then, El-Rufai’s relationship with the current administration has deteriorated.
