Nigerian Billionaire’s Ex-Wife Laments After Market Visit

Caroline Hutchins Danjuma, the ex-wife of billionaire businessman Musa Danjuma, recently voiced her concerns over the escalating economic hardship in Nigeria.

Taking to her Instagram page, Caroline shared her dismay after visiting the Sunday market. Recounting her experience, she expressed shock and sadness at the steep prices of basic food items. Caroline, who nostalgically recalled visiting the market with her grandmother, was taken aback by the current costs.

In her post, she detailed the exorbitant prices: a tuber of yam for N10,000, a paint bucket of potatoes for N9,000, a bag of rice for N85,000, and an avocado pear for N1,000 to N1,500. She noted that the trader’s demeanor was far from cheerful, deterring her from even attempting to negotiate for a discount.

“I went to the Sunday market yesterday, a place I used to visit with my grandma. The nostalgia quickly turned to sadness. How are you all coping? A tuber of yam costs N10k, a small paint bucket of potatoes is N9k, a bag of rice is N85k, and an avocado pear is N1k to N1.5k. The trader wasn’t smiling, so I didn’t even ask for a discount. Two pieces of Titus fish cost N5k. How are you all coping? I was so sad I started shopping for my domestic staff as well. I wasn’t focused on bargaining; I just felt terrible for the masses. Everything is expensive. It is well with us.”

Caroline expressed deep concern for the well-being of Nigerians, acknowledging the widespread economic strain. She proposed the idea of group sessions for mental and emotional therapy, offering her willingness to start such initiatives to support those struggling.

“Just want to take time to check up on you all today. Maybe we need group sessions for mental and emotional therapy; I am willing to start it up with some of you. Sending you all big hugs. The sun will soon shine on us all.”

Similarly, actress Nkechi Blessing recently shared her own frustrations after spending N150,000 on a few food items at the Sunday market in Ogba. She questioned the way forward for Nigerians, noting that the lack of complaints about the economy could indicate a troubling acceptance of the hardships.
