Nigerian Military Takes Shocking Position On Protest

Ahead of the planned nationwide protest slated for August, the Nigerian military has acknowledged that the citizens have the right to stage demonstrations in order to express their grievance on the economic adversity faced by the nation.

However, the military warned against the exhibition of any form of violence that may erupt during the protest.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, who spoke during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, emphasized the military’s stand against the potential for anarchy in Nigeria.

The military general said: “While citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to mobilize for anarchy and unleash terror.

“It is easy to see that the contemporary context of the planned protest is to shadow the outrage in Kenya which I must say is violent and remains unresolved.

“The level of violence being envisaged can only be described as a stage for anarchy.

“The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation. This is because we have seen wars and have witnessed anarchy in countries with which we have operated, particularly in times of ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group) and during our peacekeeping operations in various countries.”

Buba raised concerns that some individuals have a romanticized view of war, likening it to watching movies without truly comprehending the devastating consequences that accompany armed conflict.

GWG.ng reports that in recent days, officials of the President Tinubu-led-government have severally appealed to Nigerians to shelve the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest slated for the August 1 to August 10.

The nationwide protest, which aims to address the hardship faced by Nigerians has gained traction on social media, with the organizers of the protest yet unknown.
