A wave of suspicion has swept through social media after the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi announced the Federal Government’s suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items to make basic necessities more affordable for Nigerians and address the prevalent issue of hunger in the nation.

GWG.ng understands that in a public address on Monday evening, Adeniyi acknowledged the widespread economic challenges and outlined the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on its citizens.

He acknowledged that global inflation is impacting nations worldwide, including Nigeria, noting that to address this, the federal government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable.

However, this development by the Nigerian Customs to address the hunger situation only met with suspicion from Nigerians who took to social media to react.

Aloefuna Chinonso said, “The present leaders of Nigeria cannot be trusted. Don’t be surprised if they give this waiver to their political allies only. Thieves have a way of rewarding themselves. Think about it..”

THAT IRISH & SHOE PLUG™ said, “I just want to say the fear of protest is the beginning of wisdom, we should do this every 3 months, they will be on their toes.”
