Telecom Services Disrupted In Nigeria Amid Protest

Amid widespread protest against the economic hardships under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, subscribers of major telecommunications companies experienced significant network disruptions on Thursday in Nigeria.

The outages affected MTN, Glo, 9mobile, and Airtel users, hindering communication and information sharing among protesters.

The network disruptions coincided with nationwide protests against soaring food prices and the escalating cost of living, despite President Tinubu’s appeal for calm and threats of a security crackdown. Protesters faced considerable challenges in coordinating their efforts and disseminating information due to the poor internet services.

Notably, none of the telecom companies have provided explanations for the service interruptions, fueling speculation about the cause of the disruptions. Earlier in the week, MTN had closed its outlets nationwide after its Lagos office was attacked by irate customers on Monday, resulting in damage to the office’s iron fence.

The telecommunications outages in Nigeria during the protest have raised concerns about the potential for deliberate disruption of communication services during times of civil unrest. As the protests continue, Nigerians demand clarity on the cause of the network disruptions and prompt restoration of reliable communication services.
