Kano Govt Alleges Theft of Ganduje Corruption Case Files During Protests

The Kano State Government has raised concerns over the recent invasion of the Kano State High Court, claiming that the file pertaining to the corruption trial of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over alleged corruption was stolen during the attack.

The disappearance of the file on the alleged corruption case leveled against Ganduje the #EndBadGovernance protests, which have seen a surge in civil unrest across the country.

The High Court, one of several public properties targeted by hoodlums during the protests, suffered significant damage, with reports of vandalism and looting. On Wednesday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf conducted an on-site assessment of the destruction, accompanied by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, Chief Registrar of the High Court, Alhaji Abdullahi Ado Bayero, and several judges.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Yusuf expressed his belief that the invasion was a “staged-managed mission,” orchestrated by those seeking to derail the corruption charges against Ganduje, the Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as his family and aides. The governor described the incident as an attempt by “enemies of Kano State” to disrupt the judicial process.

“It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of the historic public buildings with a mission of averting corruption charges against the Ag. National Chairman of APC and former governor of the state Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family and aides,” Tofa’s statement read.

The vandalism, which left virtually every section of the High Court in disarray, resulted in losses estimated at over N1 billion besides the case file on the alleged corruption case leveled against Ganduje. The attackers reportedly stole office equipment, destroyed offices, set vehicles ablaze, and made off with crucial materials essential to the court’s operations.

Governor Yusuf used the occasion to urge the youth of Kano State to avoid being manipulated by those seeking to incite violence. He advised them to focus on acquiring skills for a better future, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.

In his address, Yusuf also expressed solidarity with the state’s Chief Judge, Dije Abdu Aboki, and the entire judiciary, offering his condolences for the devastating loss. He called on the judiciary to work diligently to recover and continue their proceedings, ensuring justice is served for the benefit of the public.

Finally, the governor thanked the people of Kano for their ongoing support and cooperation with his administration, and prayed for continued peace, stability, prosperity, and economic development in the state.
