UFC Star Israel Adesanya Receives Hero’s Welcome in Lagos

Nigerian-born former UFC champion Israel Adesanya received a warm homecoming in Lagos on Wednesday, despite his defeat to Dricus Du Plessis.

Israel Adesanya, who is widely celebrated for his achievements in mixed martial arts, was welcomed with open arms as he arrived at the Lagos airport, accompanied by his parents.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) shared the news of his arrival on its official X handle, posting videos of the heartfelt reception. In the post, NiDCOM wrote, “Earlier today, Nigerian-born, New Zealand Professional Kickboxer, Israel Mobolaji Temitayo Odunayo Oluwafemi Owolabi Adesanya (#stylebender) arrived in Lagos, accompanied by his parents and warmly received by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM staff.”

Adesanya’s visit comes just days after his middleweight title fight at UFC 305 in Perth, where he suffered a fourth-round submission loss to South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis. Despite the setback, the Lagos native remains a source of pride and inspiration for many Nigerians, as demonstrated by the enthusiastic welcome he received upon his return.

GWG.ng reports that the Israel Adesanya who is now based in New Zealand is one of the bright stars that the Abike Dabiri-Erewa led NiDCOM is proud to showcase as a good export from Nigeria hence the Lagos Airport recetpion.
