Anambra police checkpoint killing

In a significant breakthrough, 20 medical students and several other Nigerians held captive in Ntunkon Forest, Benue State, have been successfully rescued.

The news was confirmed by the Nigerian Police Public Relations Officer, Adejobi Olumuyiwa, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, August 23, 2024.

Contrary to circulating reports and social media posts suggesting that a ransom was paid for their release, Olumuyiwa clarified that no money was exchanged. “We confirm the release of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity. Without any ransom paid,” he stated.

Olumuyiwa emphasized that the rescue operation was carried out tactically and professionally, crediting the success to the coordinated efforts of security agencies, local communities, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

“We commend the security agencies, locals, and ONSA for their commitment and resilience. Thanks to you all,” he added, acknowledging the vital role played by all parties involved in securing the release of the hostages.

Further details on the rescue operation are expected to be released soon, as the nation celebrates the safe return of those who were held against their will.
