Buhari Now Laughing At Tinubu, Yoruba Economic Experts – Reuben Abati

Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s economy, labeling the current economic situation as a “gross embarrassment” saying that former President Muhammadu Buhari would probably be laughing.

Speaking on ARISE TV’s *The Morning Show*, Abati expressed his concerns, stating, “We now find ourselves in a situation where former President Muhammadu Buhari is probably laughing.” He imagined Buhari thinking, “I thought these Yoruba people said they knew how to manage the economy? Well, the economy is now in their hands, and they have mismanaged it.”

Abati’s criticism targeted the Southwest, traditionally regarded as better equipped to manage the nation’s economy. He pointed out that no evidence of this expertise has emerged under Tinubu’s administration, citing widespread financial hardship. He highlighted the skyrocketing costs of essentials, including the price of Suya, which now sells for an astonishing N1850 per stick. “We can’t even afford Suya anymore—all within a few weeks,” he lamented.

He further emphasized the severe impact on Lagos, which he described as turning into a “ghost town.” “How many vehicles do you see on the road now? People are cutting back on their lifestyles, families are struggling, and husbands are now going to markets themselves to ensure their wives don’t inflate the grocery budget,” Abati noted.

Abati’s sharp criticism comes amid growing discontent over Tinubu’s harsh economic policies, which have been widely condemned across various sectors. His remarks reflect the deepening frustration many Nigerians feel as they grapple with rising living costs and economic instability under the current administration.
