Ajaero DSS NLC

The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted bail to Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), allowing for his release from custody.

GWG.ng recalls that that DSS operatives arrested Ajaero on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while he was heading to the United Kingdom.

Ajaero was set to attend a Trade Union Congress (TUC) conference in the UK.

In response to his arrest, the NLC held an emergency meeting of its National Administrative Council (NAC) to address the situation and plan their response.

The NLC strongly condemned the arrest and detention of Ajaero, demanding his immediate and unconditional release before midnight.

The labour union stated that the arrest was an attack on all Nigerian workers.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Deputy President Adeyanju Adewale, the NLC put all its affiliates, state councils, and Nigerians on high alert.

The NLC also suggested that Ajaero’s arrest might be an attempt to delay the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Eventually, the DSS released Ajaero before the midnight deadline given by the NLC.

GWG.ng reports that the NLC had summoned an extra-ordinary meeting of its National Executive Committee, NEC for Tuesday morning where issues pertaining to the arrest were expected to be discussed. It is, not known if the meeting would still proceed given the release of the NLC president.
