Lagos auctioned vehicles

A viral video circulating on social media has captured an emotional and distressing scene as several elderly men, referred to as “people’s fathers,” were seen crying uncontrollably after their vehicles were seized by the Lagos State Government and auctioned off.

The incident when the cars were auctioned reportedly took place under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, after the vehicles were impounded for violation of traffic laws enacted by the Lagos State Government.

According to the individual who posted the video, the vehicles were auctioned at minimal prices, described as “peanuts,” while the owners, some of whom are elderly, stood by helplessly and wept as their vehicles were sold right in front of them by the Lagos authorities.

The traffic law violations, which led to the seizure of the vehicles, have not been explicitly detailed, but breaking traffic regulations is a serious offense under Lagos State’s traffic laws. These laws, intended to ensure road safety, can result in harsh penalties, including vehicle impoundment and auctioning.

Critics argue that while enforcing traffic regulations is essential, the government should consider the human impact of such actions. The sight of elderly men reduced to tears has prompted widespread calls for compassion in the execution of penalties, especially for minor infractions.

As the video continues to circulate, there has been growing public debate on whether alternative measures, such as fines or warnings, could be applied in cases like this, rather than the public auctioning of vehicles that leaves families devastated.
