Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has issued an unwavering threat to the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cautioning him against accepting a vice-presidential position in the 2027 general elections.

In a video shared on Monday, Aisha Yesufu expressed her displeasure at the suggestion, with a threat to oppose Peter Obi if he accepts such a role.

Yesufu questioned why Nigerians consistently push for the best candidates to take secondary positions, stating her dissatisfaction with this mindset. Her remarks follow reports that Obi had expressed openness to working alongside a more qualified candidate, even as a vice president, if it would benefit the nation.

Peter Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, has recently shown interest in working with other political figures ahead of the 2027 elections. During an interview with News Central, Obi emphasized his willingness to collaborate with leaders, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Obi made it clear that any potential collaboration must prioritize improving citizens’ lives, not just securing political power. “I’m ready to collaborate with anyone who is interested in lifting people out of poverty. If the collaboration is for state capture or just to win an election, I will not be part of it,” Obi said.

When asked about the possibility of being a vice-presidential candidate, Obi explained that he was open to the idea if the individual in question could do a better job than him. “Quite frankly, for me, I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If I see people who can do the work better, I will,” he added.

However, Obi swiftly clarified his stance on the matter, denying claims that he had confirmed any intention to serve as a vice president in 2027. On Saturday, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi debunked the reports, accusing some individuals of twisting his words.

“Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record. I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges,” Obi asserted. He condemned what he described as propaganda, aimed at distorting his message.

As the 2027 election approaches, Obi remains focused on addressing Nigeria’s current challenges, and it remains to be seen what his political trajectory will be in the coming years and what happens to the threat from Aisha Yesufu.
