Atiku Presses Tinubu Harder, Says Presidency Turning Into Travel Agency As Nigerians Suffer

The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken the presidency to task over its explanation of the relocation of President Bola Tinubu from the United Kingdom, UK to France in continuation of his leave.

Following the news that President Tinubu who departed Nigeria for what was announced to be a two-week working leave in the UK had left that country for Paris, the presidency had on Friday said that the trip shouldn’t be a bother.

Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on communications had said that so long as the trip fell within the two-week leave that it should not bother anyone as the president was entitled to do what he liked during his leave.

However, the Atiku camp on Sunday demurred on the leave explanation as Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant to the former vice-president countered with the assertion that the Tinubu aides should not treat the presidency as a travel agency.

He wrote:

While Nigerians grapple with fuel price hikes, inflation, insecurity, and a crumbling economy, we’re told not to worry because, well, “it’s his private time…this @aonanuga1956 of a ‘boy’ needs help!

It’s funny how the same office that demands sacrifices from citizens – tightening belts, paying more taxes, enduring hardships – suddenly becomes a playground of personal indulgence at the top. Public office isn’t a personal getaway; it’s a duty that requires being accountable 24/7, even on “leave.” And telling Nigerians that he can “go anywhere” reeks of indifference, as if the citizens’ are nothing but some inconsequential afterthought. 

Nigerians deserve leadership that matches the gravity of the challenges they face, not one that treats the presidency like a travel agency.
