PDP Aiyedatiwa's Minimum Wage

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has criticized the announcement of a ₦73,000 minimum wage for civil servants made by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

In a statement released on Monday, the PDP claimed that the Governor’s decision was a “Greek gift” aimed at winning votes from workers ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election.

The announcement was made during the campaign launch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ondo West Local Government Area on Saturday.

The PDP’s statement, signed by Ayo Fadaka, the Special Adviser for Media and Publicity of its Campaign Organisation, questioned the timing of the wage announcement, suggesting it was inappropriate to make such a declaration during a political event. They urged the people of Ondo to be cautious and not to be misled by what they described as a political ploy.

The statement read, “It is disrespectful to announce the new minimum wage for the dignified workers of Ondo State during an election campaign, thereby politicizing their welfare for political gain in the upcoming gubernatorial election on November 16. The civil servants in Ondo see this promise of a wage increase as another Greek gift intended to deceive them into voting for him. The timing is poorly thought out, and no one will take him seriously since he has already deceived the civil service once; they won’t let him fool them again—once bitten, twice shy!”

In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa defended his announcement. He advised the PDP not to exploit the workers’ welfare for political gain. In a statement from his Special Assistant on New Media, Sunday Abire, the Governor asserted that the workers in the state deserve the new minimum wage and encouraged the PDP to reflect on its own actions.

“Aiyedatiwa will never say something he does not mean. He did not announce the ₦73,000 minimum wage to gain political advantage. It is shameful that the PDP does not understand that there are proper procedures to implement the minimum wage,” Abire stated.

He added that the workers of Ondo State are committed to supporting the party and the Governor who consistently pays salaries and provides benefits. “The people have noticed the PDP’s frustration since Governor Aiyedatiwa announced a substantial minimum wage that is not yet available in any other state in Nigeria. May Ondo State workers, whom the PDP wishes to undermine, continue to thrive under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership beyond 2025,” the statement concluded.

Abire also emphasized that Ondo State workers are eager for positive changes and are already looking forward to increased pay. “It’s a year of increase for the workers of Ondo State. There is no controversy. Prosperity is here to stay with Governor Aiyedatiwa in charge.”
