Man Discovered With Three Penises In Rare Medical Case
A man has been found to have lived with three penises, a phenomenon known as triphallia.
Researchers at the University of Birmingham Medical School in the UK have made an unusual discovery of triphallia—a condition where an individual has three penises—while examining the body of a 78-year-old man.
This is the second known case globally, with the first found in Iraq in 2020. The man likely lived unaware of his condition, as the two extra penises were hidden in the scrotum and were non-functional. Researchers explained that both functional and secondary penises shared a urethra, which may have contributed to the condition going undetected. The man also had prior surgery for a hernia, complicating the detection further.
Triphallia, much rarer than diphallia (two penises), is an extremely rare congenital defect. Diphalia affects about one in five to six million people, while triphallia is even more rare. Both conditions can lead to issues such as erectile dysfunction, urinary infections, and fertility challenges.
According to researchers, the case of this man with three penises is especially significant because it is the first reported in an adult. As the lead researchers noted, “We cannot be sure if the defect was unnoticed in this case, as the person had a history of having surgery to repair an inguinal hernia.”
The case of this man with three penises provides valuable insights into the condition and its implications. By carefully dissecting the donated body, researchers now have a deeper understanding of how triphallia impacts anatomy and potentially overall health. This case highlights how rare medical anomalies can sometimes go undiagnosed throughout a person’s life, particularly when symptoms are subtle or concealed.
