Yoruba Nation Member Dies In Custody

A member of the Yoruba Nation group, Adejumo Lateef, has tragically died while in custody, according to reports.

This was confirmed when 27 other members of the group were presented before the Oyo State High Court on Wednesday for arraignment. Lateef was the 18th defendant in the case, which involves the Oyo State Government prosecuting individuals for an attempt to declare the Yoruba Nation as a sovereign state during an invasion of the Government Secretariat in Ibadan on April 13, 2024.

The court proceedings, overseen by Justice K.B. Olawoyin, revealed that the suspects face five charges: conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful assembly, treasonable felony, and treason.

These charges are punishable under Section 37 (2) of the Criminal Code of Oyo State. The state’s prosecution team, led by Director of Public Prosecution, S.O. Adeoye, brought these charges against activists, including Adeyemo Peter, Adeyemo Joseph, Amos Ogundeji, and others.

However, the arraignment was postponed due to a lack of legal representation for most of the defendants. Some were represented by Adebola Ogungbe and Toluwase Ogundeji, while two other lawyers, Yomi Ogunlola and S.A. Sanmi, volunteered to represent the unrepresented defendants. Additionally, three of the accused, the 6th, 23rd, and 24th defendants, indicated their intention to contact their families to arrange legal counsel.

Justice Olawoyin adjourned the case to November 6th, 8th, and 13th for further arraignment and hearings, allowing more time for the defendants to secure legal representation.
