Rivers Youths Protest Hunger, Block Major Highway

A fresh wave of protests erupted in Rivers State on Friday, as youths took to the Port Harcourt-Owerri highway to express anger over hunger and poor governance.

Demonstrators, mostly young people, held placards with various messages and chanted anti-government songs, voicing frustration with current conditions.

The protesters blocked the road with a coffin and canopies, drawing attention to the deteriorating state of the highway. One resident described the action, saying, “The protest is against economic hardship, and the major road has been blocked. The Port Harcourt-Owerri expressway has been blocked with a coffin and canopies.”

Another protester from the Ohaji Egbema community stated, “We, the youths of Ohaji Egbema, are protesting against bad governance, against bad roads, lack of electricity, hunger. No clean water and lack of electricity in this local government.”

They emphasized the ongoing issues with unclean water and unreliable electricity, which they say have deeply affected their community’s quality of life.

This demonstration follows a similar incident in October, when protests in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, escalated into violence.

During that unrest, one person died amid clashes linked to the recent local government elections. Eyewitnesses reported gunfire, causing residents to panic and flee the scene.
