5 Rescued So Far Abuja Building Collapse

Five individuals have been successfully rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident occurred on Saturday at Vidaz Estate in the Sabon Lugbe extension of the FCT.

The Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police Command, Superintendent Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday. She revealed that the collapsed structure had previously been demolished by FCT authorities due to its location in an illegally acquired area.

“Our preliminary investigation shows that the building had been demolished earlier by the FCT authorities because it was situated on land that was illegally acquired. Unfortunately, scavengers tampering with the remains for scrap metal further compromised the structure, leading to its secondary collapse,” Adeh explained.

She reported that five people were rescued from the debris without any fatalities. Adeh urged the public to exercise caution and respect the boundaries of demolished structures and construction sites to avoid similar incidents in the future.

However, eyewitness accounts indicated that up to 40 people were initially believed to be trapped when the building caved in, raising concerns about the safety protocols in place for such sites.

This incident is the latest in a series of building collapses in Abuja. Just a few weeks ago, a two-storey residential building in the city’s Kubwa area collapsed, leading to the rescue of four individuals, while an unknown number were initially feared trapped. The Kubwa building was located near Cupid Hotel on Sultan Dasuki Way.
