A landlord named Obong Ete, who lives on Waddel Street in Calabar South, Cross River State, was severely beaten by his tenants and neighbors for allegedly stealing from them.

The incident occurred on Sunday as his tenants and neighbors were preparing to leave for church. The angry residents attacked Ete with horse whips and canes, hitting him with planks and beating him badly.

Local residents complained that Ete, a bachelor in his 30s, often terrorized them at night. One resident, John Akpan, stated that despite being a landlord, Ete frequently stole food and other items from his neighbors. “Obong Ete has been doing this for a long time. It is good that he is again publicly disgraced. He doesn’t want to repent. Many times, youth leaders and vigilante groups have traced stolen items to his apartment and beaten him up,” Akpan explained.

Another tenant, Magdalene Effiom, mentioned that Ete’s family had told them he once stole from a church, which led worshippers to curse him. “Perhaps these curses are affecting him,” she added. “Other neighbors whom he has burgled have also been cursing him, too.”

After the beating, local youth leaders, who had previously reported Ete to the divisional police officer at the Mbukpa station, forced him to swear an oath promising not to rob or intimidate his tenants and neighbors again. Ete, visibly beaten, admitted, “I am sorry for stealing. I swear that I will not continue to steal again.” He agreed that if he stole again, they could punish him as they saw fit.

The youth leaders suspected that a young man living with Ete was involved in the thefts. They ordered him to leave Ete’s apartment, warning him never to return to the community or face legal consequences if he did.

In response to the situation, Police PRO Irene Ugbo condemned the violent actions of the residents, urging that such matters should always be reported to the police.
