Colonialism Not Cause Of Nigeria’s Problms – Kemi Badenoch (Video)
The newly elected leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has shared her views on colonialism.
The Nigerian-born lawmaker believes that it is incorrect for former British colonies to continually blame their underdevelopment on colonial history.
In a video that gained attention in October, Badenoch, who previously served as the UK’s business and trade minister, addressed how some countries point to British colonialism as the main reason for their slow socio-economic progress. She argued that instead of focusing on colonialism as the cause, these nations should recognize the British Empire’s role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
Badenoch acknowledged that while the British Empire had its flaws, it also achieved significant milestones, including the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. She explained, “There are many countries now who want to use guilt to try and exploit the UK. They asked for reparation. I saw it as a trade minister. It is not a culture war.”
She further recalled a conversation at the World Trade Organization (WTO), where a foreign minister argued that the UK should give up certain practices because of colonialism and allow countries more time to develop. Badenoch dismissed these arguments, calling them “a scam” and urging others not to fall for such claims.
Badenoch emphasized the importance of focusing on the UK’s interests while maintaining good relationships with neighboring countries and the international community. She stressed, “We need to make sure we put this country first, we work well with our neighbours, we work well with other countries. But we have to look after ourselves.”
While recognizing the mistakes of the British Empire, she also highlighted its positive impacts, particularly its role in ending slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. She concluded, “There are many things the British Empire got wrong but there are many amazing things the British Empire also did. We need to be honest about it and stop pretending that it was all bad. The British Empire ended slavery, the Atlantic slave trade. We need to talk about that more.”
