Racist Comments: Tottenham’s Bentancur Suspended For 7 Matches
Tottenham Hotspur’s midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur, has been given a seven-match suspension and a fine of £100,000.
This penalty comes after an independent regulatory commission found him guilty of making racist comments towards his teammate, Son Heung-min.
Reports indicate that Bentancur made these remarks during a pre-season interview, leading to the charges. The Football Association (FA) confirmed the suspension applies to domestic games and includes the financial penalty.
Bentancur has been an important part of manager Ange Postecoglou’s team this season. He played in all but one Premier League match, missing only due to a concussion. His absence due to the suspension will be a significant challenge for the team.
A statement released on Monday said: “An independent regulatory commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview.
“It was alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 by acting improperly, using abusive and/or insulting words, and bringing the game into disrepute.”
