The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery, located in Rivers State, bringing hope for a more competitive petroleum market in the country.

The refinery, now operational, is producing petrol, diesel, kerosene, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

This development comes amid concerns over the high cost of petrol in Nigeria, with Dangote Refinery, the previously dominant player, selling the product at ₦970 per litre—a price many Nigerians deemed excessive compared to imported fuel.

The reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery has been widely celebrated, with many Nigerians optimistic that increased competition will lead to fairer pricing. The monopoly enjoyed by Dangote Refinery has faced criticism, with calls for alternatives to alleviate the financial burden on consumers.

In what is being perceived as a reaction to the new competition, Dangote Refinery took to X (formerly Twitter) earlier today to promote its petrol products in an effort to attract marketers and customers.

The rare public outreach has fueled speculation about whether the company is beginning to feel pressure from the competition.

Economic analysts view this as a significant turning point for Nigeria’s oil sector. They anticipate that the reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery and President Bola Tinubu’s directive to rehabilitate the Warri and Kaduna Refineries could flood the market with locally refined petroleum products, further driving down prices and diversifying supply sources.

This new development promises a shake-up in the petroleum industry, with increased competition potentially benefiting consumers and creating a more dynamic energy market in Nigeria.
