Gospel Singer Sinach Faces ₦5b Lawsuit Over ‘Way Maker’ Song
Nigerian gospel artiste Osinachi Egbu, popularly known as Sinach, is facing a ₦5 billion lawsuit over her hit song “Way Maker.” The lawsuit, filed by music producer Michael Oluwole (also known as Maye), claims that Sinach infringed on his copyright.
Maye asserts that he worked as a studio engineer on the song, which was released in December 2015. He argues that his contributions included recording, mixing, mastering the song, and creating instrumental elements such as piano, strings, and synthesizers.
In the legal case, Maye demands a declaration of co-ownership of the song. He claims that Sinach commercially released “Way Maker” without formalizing an agreement or compensating him, thus violating his performer’s rights. Maye’s legal team is seeking general damages of ₦5 billion for the alleged infringements.
Maye’s counsel argues that in the absence of a written agreement, all fees from licensing or copyright assignments related to the song should be divided equally between him and Sinach. He further claims that Sinach’s refusal to share the song’s proceeds is “deliberate and oppressive.” Maye is asking the court to compel Sinach to disclose all licenses and assignments related to “Way Maker,” account for the accrued fees, and pay him his rightful share.
On the other hand, Sinach, represented by her lawyer Emeka Etiaba (SAN), denies the allegations. She maintains that she is the sole author of the song, which she composed, arranged, and performed, along with other collaborators such as Nwabude Chude Arinze, before Maye’s involvement. Sinach’s legal team argues that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the master recording, a service for which he was paid ₦150,000 (approximately $300). They contend that this payment absolves Sinach of any obligation to grant Maye copyright or performer’s rights.
The case is being heard in the Federal High Court in Lagos, with Maye providing testimony and the defense disputing his claims. The trial has been adjourned until January 2025 for further proceedings.
“Way Maker,” which became a global anthem after its release, has been covered by many artistes, including Michael W. Smith, Mandisa, and Leeland. The song’s success has brought Sinach worldwide recognition, earning her prestigious awards such as the GMA Dove Song of the Year. In 2020, Sinach became the first African artiste to top the Billboard Christian Songwriters chart.
Sinach is known for her powerful gospel songs and has had a long career in the music industry. She began her musical journey at Christ Embassy Church in Lagos and has released several successful albums. Sinach, who holds a degree in physics, is married to Pastor Joseph Egbu, and the couple has a daughter named Rhoda.
